To increase the likelihood that samples will be successfully shipped, received and processed, we recommend that:
- Each sample meets the guidelines for quantity, concentration, and quality.
- All samples are shipped in 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tubes.
- Tubes are labeled using the following sample identification guidelines.
- Sample ID spreadsheet has been completed.
Sample Identification
Each individual sample should be sent inside a 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tube (cat# 1415-2600, USA Scientific).
To keep track of samples, tubes should be numbered sequentially (with number written on lid and side, refer to Figure 1.C). To minimize ambiguity, please use our numbering convention when writing sample id numbers on sample tubes (Figure 1.A, B).
All sample information should be documented using the Sample ID spreadsheet.

Figure 1: Our numbering convention follows five simple rules: A. (1) The number "one" is written as a simple vertical line without any embellishments. (2) The number "four" is written with an open top and a tail (red arrows). (3) The number "seven" is written with a horizontal line through the stem (blue arrow). (4) All sample ID numbers are written with 3 digits. (5) A horizontal line is drawn beneath the number. B. An example of our numbering convention, the number "fourteen". C. A properly labeled 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tube. |
Packaging Samples
Each numbered sample tube should be wrapped in Parafilm® M (cat# 01851-AB,
SPI supplies) or GLAD Press'n Seal Freezer® wrap
(Figure 2), and then placed in a box (available from USA Scientific, either cardboard [cat# 9023-8181],
or polypropylene [cat# 2310-5800]). Place a printout of the completed "Sample ID" form on top of the tubes. Once closed you should tape the box shut, signing your name across the tape with an indelible marker. The box should then be
sealed inside an impermeable plastic bag and kept in an insulated container on standard blue ice (not dry ice).
