The GeneSieve™ Solution
Bar Harbor Biotechnology, Inc. has developed a bioanalysis software package called GeneSieve™ which merges databases containing gene-centric biological information in a new and innovative way. With its powerful search engine capability, GeneSieve™ can filter or "sieve" thousands of genes for custom population of Real-Time PCR arrays that have a unifying biological theme, such as a particular disease or pathway of interest. GeneSieve™ is composed of several modules that work together to assemble 'constellations' of genes associated with specific biological pathways and processes. Performing text-based mining of the scientific literature, GeneSieve™ has overcome many of the current challenges of Named Entity Recognition (NER). It can quickly search the growing list of over 16 million scientific abstracts for genes involved in a related process with a lower false positive rate than other methods. Genes are subsequently ranked by multiple fields including quantity and quality of literature references. Additional gene filter modules include:

• Canonical Signaling Pathways
• Microarray Data
• Gene Ontology Classifications
• Downstream Targets of Transcription Factors

GeneSieve™ can also be used to sieve genes by chromosome position for performing gene discovery within Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) and mapped mutant loci. Data for GeneSieve™ is stored in a simplified way such that multiple modules can be cross-queried simultaneously for increased validation of results.

How GeneSieve™ Works
GeneSieve™ is incredibly easy to operate. With an intuitive user interface a subject keyword, gene ID number, or gene name is entered. All mammalian genes tagged with that search term are filtered through the GeneSieve™ modules to look for relationships. The result is a hit list of genes ranked by their relevance associated with the particular search term. GeneSieve™ then filters genes of interest using a variety of parameters such as overall score, the type of data used, literature reference, and microarray fold change. The final list of genes can then be ordered from Bar Harbor Biotechnology, Inc. as a StellARray™ populated with pre-validated Real-Time PCR oligos. Currently GeneSieve™ is available in a limited "Free-To-Use" mode. Output from GeneSieve™ will only yield StellARray™ plates. GeneSieve™ will bring a new level of search capacity to researchers with or without bioinformatics expertise.
